The USMNT Players You Need to Know

The US announces their official 26-man roster on May 26th. Before the names drop — here's who's likely on it, what they do, and why you should care.

Roster reveal: Tuesday, May 26th — 1PM to 4PM ET

The US are playing a home World Cup for the first time since 1994. This squad has more European-based talent than any American team in history — players at Juventus, AC Milan, PSV, and Bournemouth. They missed the 2018 World Cup entirely, which was an embarrassment. This is the redemption arc. Here are the people who could make it happen.

1. Christian Pulisic

The Captain

Attacking Midfielder / Winger · AC Milan

Why You Should Care

Pulisic is the face of American soccer and has been for years. He wears the armband, he carries the team's hopes, and he shows up when it matters. He's played in the Premier League, won trophies in Europe, and is now at AC Milan in Italy's top division. He's the player every American fan watches first when the US plays.

The Moment That Defines Them

He scored a goal against Iran at the 2022 World Cup — a goal that sent the US through to the knockout rounds — and immediately had to leave the pitch because he'd injured himself winning it. That's Pulisic in a nutshell: all in, every time.

What to Watch For

He cuts inside from the left wing onto his stronger right foot to shoot. When he gets into that pocket of space just inside the box, bad things happen for the opposition.

2. Folarin Balogun

The Goal Machine

Striker · AS Monaco

Why You Should Care

Balogun is the US's best pure striker heading into 2026. He was born in New York, raised in England, and chose to play for the US over England — which says something. He's been banging in goals in Ligue 1 (the French top division) and the Champions League. Coming into this tournament, he's the first name on the teamsheet up front.

The Moment That Defines Them

After years of being underrated and overlooked, he broke through at Monaco with some of the best attacking numbers of any American abroad. The question was always whether he'd commit to the US — when he did, it felt like a real statement of intent.

What to Watch For

He's sharp in the penalty area — clinical when chances fall to him. He doesn't waste opportunities. Watch how he positions himself before the ball arrives, not just what he does with it.

3. Weston McKennie

The Engine

Central Midfielder · Juventus

Why You Should Care

McKennie is a box-to-box midfielder — meaning he covers every blade of grass, gets stuck in defensively, and still contributes going forward. He plays for Juventus, one of the biggest clubs in Italy. He's been up and down in his career — dropped from squads, came back stronger — and heading into 2026 he's playing some of the best football of his life.

The Moment That Defines Them

He was essentially in Pochettino's doghouse for a period — not getting picked, not being in form. Then he turned it around completely. The comeback made him a more rounded player and he scored one of the US's goals in a big recent fixture. That resilience is what you want in a tournament player.

What to Watch For

He loves a late run into the box. Defenders don't always track him because he starts deep, and then suddenly he's arriving at the back post. He's scored some big goals that way.

4. Tyler Adams

The Leader

Defensive Midfielder · Seattle Sounders

Why You Should Care

Adams is the heartbeat of the team. He's not the flashiest player on the pitch but he might be the most important. He wins the ball, he organizes the defence, and he sets the tone for how the US presses. He's the kind of player coaches build systems around and teammates follow. When he's fit and on form, the whole team is better.

The Moment That Defines Them

At a tense post-match press conference at the 2022 World Cup, a journalist asked Adams — who is Black — how he felt playing for a country with a racism problem. He handled it with composure and intelligence that stopped the room. That moment showed who he is beyond football.

What to Watch For

Watch how many times he breaks up opposition attacks before they develop. He reads the game early — intercepting passes, getting in passing lanes, snuffing out danger before it starts. Unglamorous but crucial.

5. Ricardo Pepi

The Finisher

Striker · PSV Eindhoven

Why You Should Care

Pepi was identified as a top prospect years ago and took time to find his level in Europe. He found it at PSV in the Netherlands, where he's been scoring goals — 13 in 23 games in one recent stretch, even playing through injury. He gives the US a physical, direct option up front alongside Balogun. Grew up in El Paso, Texas — border culture runs through everything about him.

The Moment That Defines Them

He played through a broken arm to keep his place in the squad and keep scoring. That tells you everything about his mentality and how much making this World Cup meant to him.

What to Watch For

He's effective in the air and good at holding the ball up — linking play for other attackers coming through. His link-up with Balogun could be lethal if Pochettino plays them together.

6. Diego Luna

The Wild Card

Midfielder · Real Salt Lake

Why You Should Care

Luna is one of the younger players in the conversation and one of the most technically exciting. He plays his club football in MLS for Real Salt Lake — which might not sound glamorous — but he's been a consistent first-choice call-up because of how he plays. He's quick, creative, and fearless. Pochettino clearly trusts him.

The Moment That Defines Them

He led all US players in appearances during a recent qualifying cycle — earning those minutes on merit, not reputation. For a young MLS player to out-earn caps over players at European giants is a real statement.

What to Watch For

He drives at defenders, he's not afraid to try things, and he plays with an energy that gets the crowd going. If the US need a spark off the bench or someone to change a game, Luna is that option.
